ANTIFERROMAGNETIC FLUCTUATIONS AND D(X2-Y2)-PAIRING IN THE CUPRATES

Here we argue that the dominant quasi-particle scattering mechanism in the cuprate superconductors arises from antiferromagnetic spin-fluctuations and that therefore the one-band Hubbard model provides the appropriate starting point for understanding their properties. Then using Monte Carlo and diagrammatic calculations we show that antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations lead to an attractive pairing interaction in the d(x2-y2) singlet channel. We conclude with a discussion of experiments which provide information on the symmetry of the gap.
