Biopsies from 5 patients with my otonic dystrophy were studied with the light and electron microscopic. A nonspecific degenerative process of myofibrils is comparable to that in Duchenne -type dystrophy. Mitochon -drial alterations which are described cannot be adequately related to the basic disease mechanism. Proliferation of myofibrils in subsarcoplasmic masses is related to large muscle fibers, centrally placed nuclei and circularly arranged fibrils.
