LIGHT-EMITTING PROJECTION CHAMBERS FOR THE STUDY OF RARE PROCESSES IN PARTICLE PHYSICS

摘要
The emission of light by atoms excited by electron avalanches permits the optical imaging of the electrons liberated in gases by ionizing phenomena. Some of the present applications of the method are presented: imaging of VUV photons from Cherenkov radiation, in cases where very complex patterns are expected, or imaging of the beta-particles emerging from surfaces, for biology applications. The applications of the method to calorimetry, three-dimensional track imaging, search of rare events are discussed.
