THE INFLUENCE OF SUBSTITUTION OF CE ON THE SUPERCONDUCTING BEHAVIOR OF YBA2CU4O8 AND DYBA2CU4O8

By synthesizing single-phase samples corresponding to compositions Y0.9Ce0.1Ba2Cu4O8 and DY0.9Ce0.1Ba2Cu4O8, using an ambient oxygen-pressure synthesis route, it has been shown that up to 10% of Y or Dy can be replaced by Ce4+ in the 124-structure. The superconducting behaviour of these samples is analysed in comparison to that of pure YBa2Cu4O8 and DyBa2Cu4O8, also prepared under identical conditions, and the available data from the literature on the corresponding 10% Ca-doped 124-phases. It is observed that substitution of Ce4+ at Y- or Dy-sites has a much stronger deleterious influence, viz. dT(c)/dx almost-equal-to - 2.5 and - 3.2 K/at.% Ce, respectively, than the corresponding enhancement in T(c) caused by substitution of Ca in the structure.
