ION-BEAM-INDUCED SURFACE INSTABILITY OF GLASSY FE40NI40B20

Depending on the angle of incidence , implantation of fast heavy ions into amorphous Fe40Ni40B20 leads to drastic surface smoothing (15°) or surface roughening (20°) when fluences between 1014 and 1015 ions/cm2 are applied. Both effects proceed without detectable mass loss. Prior to roughening, rather regular undulations appear with wavelengths between 20 and 30 m. It is argued that the observed surface instability is a consequence of an ion-induced shear flow which presumably occurs in all amorphous materials. © 1995 The American Physical Society.
