ADSORPTION OF POLY(STYRENESULFONATE) AND IONIC SURFACTANT FROM THEIR BINARY-MIXTURES ON ALUMINA

Adsorption of poly(styrenesulfonate) (PSS), sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), and hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride (HTAC) from single solutions and PSS-SDS and PSS-HTAC binary mixed solutions on positively charged alumina has been investigated. In the PSS-SDS system, the adsorbed amount of PSS decreases considerably with increasing concentration of SDS. The micropolarity of the PSS-SDS adsorbed layer sensed by pyrene-1-carboxaldehyde (PCA) is less polar than that in the supernatant, while the microviscosity sensed by 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinyl-1-oxy (TEMPO) is greater than that in the supernatant. In the PSS-HTAC system, adsorption of PSS is enhanced due to formation of a complex of PSS-HTAC on alumina. The micropolarity of the PSS-HTAC adsorbed layer is less polar than that in the supernatant, but the microviscosity of the PSS-HTAC adsorbed layer is almost the same as that in the supernatant.
