STRUCTURE AND MORPHOLOGY OF COPPER TETRA-TERT-BUTYLPHTHALOCYANINE LANGMUIR-BLODGETT-FILMS

Structure and morphology of copper tetra-tert-butylphthalocyanine (Cu-tert-Bu4PC) Langmuir-Blodgett films were investigated using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), transmission electron diffraction (TED), X-ray diffraction and light microscopy. TED fringes showed in-plane uniaxial texture with preferential orientation of molecular planes perpendicular to the compressing direction. TEM micrographs revealed small worm-like crystalline domains (10-30 nm in length) densely stacked in a presumably amorphous matrix. According to the TED patterns, two principal perpendicular periods characterize the in-plane stacking: 0.332 nm and 1.8 nm. Using computer simulation a 'zig-zag' molecular packing of the most frequent isomers was found to be consistent with these distances as well as with the observed value of area per molecule in deposited molecular films (0.5-0.7 nm2).
