摘要
1. Physiological aspects of cold hardiness in the lumbricid earthworm Dendrobaena octaedra (Savigny) were studied. 2. Embryos and newly hatched individuals of D. octaedra were found to be freezing sensitive. 3. Melting points of cocoon and embryo fluids were relatively high, above -0.4-degrees-C, which indicates that cryoprotective low molecular weight substances were not present. Acclimation at 0-degrees-C for 35 days did not induce accumulation of such substances and no thermal hysteresis was found. 4. Cocoons were able to tolerate extensive dehydration and this caused a significant lowering of the mean supercooling point. The role of dehydration in the strategy of cold hardiness in D. octaedra is discussed.
