ANHARMONICITY AND OVERTONE SPECTRA OF OH STRETCHING VIBRATIONS

Information on the shape of the potential surface of hydrogen-bonded molecules from conventional and nonlinear infrared methods is discussed. It is shown that picosecond hole-burning spectroscopy opens a new and better way to determine anharmonic frequency shifts because of the weak influence of electrical anharmonicity, while the latter effect may strongly modify conventional overtone bandshapes. Experimental data are presented for the hydrogen-bonded polymer poly(vinylbutanal) that can at least qualitatively explain the rather complex overtone bandshape.
