Environmental iodine deficiency continues to be a significant public health problem worldwide. The pathologic consequences thereof can to a large extent be reversed by the implementation of an iodization program. Iodine excess results from the use of iodine-containing medicinal or radiodiagnostic preparations and can lead to thyroid dysfunction if thyroid autoregulation is defective or absent. Iodine is an important therapeutic adjunct in the rapid alleviation of hyperthyroidism and in the preparation of the thyroid for thyroidectomy.
