EFFECTS OF RIBOFLAVIN AND INCREASED SUCROSE ON ANTHOCYANIN PRODUCTION IN SUSPENDED STRAWBERRY CELL-CULTURES

Effects of added riboflavin and increased sucrose on cell growth and anthocyanin accumulation were investigated in suspension culture from strawberry, Fragaria anansa cv. Shikinari, petiole tissue. Riboflavin reduced cell growth markedly, however, anthocyanin content using a medium with riboflavin at a concentration of 4 mg/l was about 3.3 times greater than that in the control at 8 days. The culture duration for obtaining maximum anthocyanin production was halved using this concentration of riboflavin. Anthocyanin accumulation was 10.6 and 12 times greater in combinations of a riboflavin concentration of 4 mg/l and 5% sucrose and 10% sucrose, respectively, as compared to that accumulated in the LS control media at 8 days. Maximum anthocyanin production in the medium containing a riboflavin concentration of 4 mg/l and 10% sucrose was 2.8 times greater than that in the control media, and the duration of culturing was half of the control.
