ELECTROCATALYTIC BEHAVIOR OF CO/NI ELECTRODEPOSITS IN 40WT-PERCENT KOH

Electrocoatings of cobalt/nickel alloys were obtained on iron substrate in aqueous solutions at pH 9.8 with dissolved nickel and cobalt sulfate. The composition of the alloys was varied by changing the concentration of dissolved nickel ([Co] = 0.04M) in the preparation bath. It was observed that the structure of the coatings is closely related to the applied cathodic current density (0.005 < i(c) < 0.5 A cm-2) during the alloy electrodeposition; the effect of the coating composition on its structure is small. Both the potentiodynamic behavior at low potential and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) have been investigated on such coatings in 40wt% KOH at 70-degrees-C. For the OER measurements, the anodes were preanodized for 0.5 h at 2 A cm-2 before depolarization. Both the electrocatalytic behavior at low potential and the characteristics associated with the OER are linked to the structure of the coating and its composition.
