A number of triple chained ammonium amphiphiles have been synthesized with cyano- and nitrobiphenyl, and azobenzene mesogenic moieties at the termini of their hydrophobic chains. These compounds exhibit liquid crystalline behaviour and form stable monolayers at the water-air interface. The monolayers give Z-type transfer onto hydrophilic quartz. However, the transferred material reorganizes and the morphology of the film appears to depend on the thermotropic properties. For the cyanoazobenzene containing Langmuir-Blodgett multilayers, molecular reorganization is observed upon irradiation with UV light or upon heating to give well ordered, centrosymmetric, homeotropically aligned assemblies.
