SOURCE IDENTIFICATION OF A POLLUTION INCIDENT BY HIGH TIME RESOLUTION MEASUREMENTS OF AIR PARTICULATES

Air particulates collected on streak filters at Kingston, Ontario, Canada during two two-week sampling periods have been analyzed with PIXE for their elemental composition. With a time resolution of two hours, high S concentrations in the air were observed during several periods of approximately daily duration. As a procedure for determining the source of such pollution incidences, the back trajectories of the air masses reaching Kingston during these episodes were calculated. Invariably, the air parcels arriving at the times of high S concentration had passed over the Ohio Valley in the United States on their path to Kingston. © 1990.
