DO THE INTRAMOLECULAR C = C STRETCHING VIBRATIONAL-MODES IN ET MEDIATE ELECTRON-PAIRING IN KAPPA-(ET)2X SUPERCONDUCTORS

Isotopic labelling (C-13) of all six double-bonded carbon atoms in bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene (BEDT-TTF or ET), which results in large shifts (56-67 cm-1) in the frequencies of intramolecular a(g) modes at approximately 1500 cm-1, is found to lead to no measurable isotope effect on T(c) in the high-T(c) ambient pressure organic superconductors kappa-(ET)2Cu(NCS)2 (T(c) = 10.4 K) and kappa-(ET)2CU[N(CN)2]Br (T(c) = 11.6 K). Thus, the intramolecular C=C stretching vibrational modes in ET at energies near 1500 cm-1 are not dominant mediators of superconducting pairing in these molecular superconductors.
