Matrix-assisted desorption/ionization of large biomolecules with a TEA-CO2 laser with a wavelength of 10.6-mu-m is demonstrated. TEA-CO2 LDI mass spectra are almost identical to those obtained with the Er-YAG (2.94-mu-m) infra-red (IR) laser and very similar to UV-LDI spectra. Most of the matrices usable for Er-YAG IR-LDI have been tested at 10.6-mu-m with success, and the main features of IR-LDI e.g., the tendency towards the formation of higher charges is shown.
