IONIC DISORDER IN THE PHASE-TRANSITION OF PBTIO3

Low-frequency light scattering and dielectric measurements on the same single-domain PbTiO3 crystal are reported as a function of temperature. Spectra reveal the appearance of a quasi-elastic scattering in the vicinity of the cubic-tetragonal phase transition. The relaxing dipoles associated with this central peak are shown to explain for the main part the large values and the behaviour of the dielectric permittivity around the transition temperature. These results represent the first evidence of order/disorder process in the mechanism of the PbTiO3 phase transition which is generally considered as a textbook example of a displacive transition. © 1990, Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
