EVALUATION OF A SURFACE-RESISTANCE PARAMETRIZATION OF SULFUR-DIOXIDE

A surface resistance parametrization for the deposition of SO2 is evaluated using long-term measurements of SO2 deposition over a deciduous forest, a coniferous forest, a grassland and a heathland. The parametrization was found to yield V-d values generally in good agreement with the observations, the best agreement being for the coniferous forest and the heathland (more than 40% of variance accounted for). For these two types of vegetation no systematic bias was found in the parametrization. The agreement of measured and modelled values for the deciduous forest is probably influenced by errors in the measurements. For the grassland an underestimation of the time the surface was wet was found to be the cause for the disagreement between modelled and measured values during dry conditions. The parametrization is demonstrated to be representative for the Netherlands and can probably be adapted for much of Europe.
