VERY HIGH-RESISTIVITY ASSOCIATED WITH DIAMAGNETISM IN THE STABLE ALPDMN QUASI-CRYSTAL

Very high resistivities are measured in a set of AlPdMn pure quasicrystalline phases of high structural quality for the compositions Al100-x-yPdxMny (x/y = 22/7.5, 21/8.5, 19/9, 19/10, 18/11). The low temperature resistivity, rho4K, depends strongly on the nominal composition as well as structural quality. It reaches 6400 muOMEGA cm in as-quenched Al70.5Pd22Mn7.5, and to at least 10000 muOMEGA cm after an annealing treatment. The temperature coefficient of resistivity is strong and negative, and is correlated to the resistivity value. At low temperature (< 10 K) and low field (< 1 T), Curie-Weiss type susceptibility is observed which is overcome by a diamagnetic contribution at higher temperature and higher field. The higher the resistivity, the stronger is the diamagnetism.
