ATOMIC POSITIONS ON OXYGEN-COVERED CU(110) SURFACES

The reconstructed Cu(110)-p(2 x 1)O and Cu(110)-c(6 x 2)O surfaces were studied using low-energy ion scattering combined with time of flight. Azimuthal scans were measured with 6 keV Ar ions for recoiling O, scattered Ar and recoiling Cu atoms. Part of the scans were analysed using a newly developed computer program for Monte Carlo simulation of the particle trajectories. The program was tested by fitting the experimental data for the well known p(2 x 1) structure. The interaction potentials and vibration amplitudes found were used in the analysis of the more complex c(6 x 2) case. The c(6 x 2) structure, which was determined recently [1], is confirmed in this work and more precise atom positions for the O atoms and top Cu atoms were found.
