Digital imaging techniques and field emission electron sources for the STEM make possible characteristic X-ray images of individual elements at higher resolution than ever before. With an image resolution of less than 10 nm these elemental images have over 100 times better resolution than the earlier X-ray dot maps from the electron microprobe. Digital X-ray images of particles in the range of 2-5 nm are possible, but care must be taken to maximize the X-ray signal collected.
