Results are presented on the operation and optimization of soliton Raman fibre-ring lasers using a c. w. model-locked Nd-YAG laser at 1. 32 mu m as the source of 100 ps pump pulses. Various lengths of standard single-mode silica fibre were used, and tunable pulses as short as 100 fs generated. It is shown that with no output coupling optimization, peak pulse power levels of about 100 W were obtained in soliton pulses of about 130 fs. By inclusion of an intracavity bandwidth limiting filter and optimum cavity output mirror, completely transform-limited tunable operation should be possible together with much higher average output powers.
