:
In this paper we describe a theory of design from an optimization perspective. The theory covers a broad spectrum of the design cycle: from qualitative and innovative design to global numerical parametric design. The emphasis is on a theoretical framework leading to design conceptualization and insight concerning the interrelationships between the various parameters of the design, rather than specific numerical solutions. The optimizing design framework will be applied to a multispeed gearbox design example. Although the emphasis of the paper is on routine design, extensions as to how these same concepts and methods have been applied to innovative design will be summarized in the presentation of the general design framework. © 1990.
