SONIC SPEED AND CRITICAL-POINT MEASUREMENTS IN ETHANE BY THE ACOUSTIC-RESONANCE METHOD

Acoustic resonance measurements on pure ethane confined to a cavity have been used as a sensitive probe for location of the critical point. The method is similar to that used previously for the critical point determination in pure CO2. The sensitivity of the method derives from a strong singularity in sonic speed at the critical point. Twenty-three isochores were studied close to the critical point. These reveal bubble points, dewpoints and the critical point. A three dimensional plot (P, T, c) of the phase diagram for ethane shows this effect clearly. Comparison of the present experimental critical temperature for ethane (305.370 K) with an earlier measurement (305.379 K) by Morrison shows good agreement.
