Magnetic resonance spectroscopy allows noninvasive assessment of cerebral metabolism in newborn infants. P-31 magnetic resonance spectroscopy has demonstrated that birth asphyxia leads to delayed impairment of cerebral energy metabolism and H-1 magnetic resonance spectroscopy has shown lactate accumulation and a later decline in N-acetyl aspartate concentration. C-13 magnetic resonance spectroscopy may help explain these observations.
