OBSERVATIONS OF 40-70 MICRON BANDS OF ICE IN IRAS 09371+1212 AND OTHER STARS

摘要
IRAS 09371 + 1212 is still an absolutely unique object. This M giant star, with circumstellar CO and a spectacular bipolar nebula, displays unique IRAS far-infrared colors which had been attributed to strong emission in the 40-70 μm bands of ice, as subsequently supported by the observation of a strong 3.1 μm absorption band. The results of our KAO observations have confirmed its unusual nature: the far-infrared bands of ice are by far the strongest known. Its dust temperature, ≤50 K, is by far the lowest known for a late-type circumstellar envelope. The ice is clearly crystalline, and there are some indications that the emissivity index of the silicates is ∼2. We also report the observation of the 44 μm band in the very cold OH/IR circumstellar envelopes OH 231.8+4.2 and OH 127.8+0.0.
