Cationic surface excesses of Li+, Na+, K+, Ca2+ and Mg2+ are derived from the electrocapillary curves of the interphase between mercury and their aqueous chlorides. They are compared with previously reported data on LaCl3 and AlCl3 obtained under similar conditions. The influence of cationic charge and size on the interfacial properties is discussed. While the solvent contribution to the surface excess is mainly determined by the size of the solvated cation, its charge appears to have a more relevant influence on the specific adsorption of chloride.
