CLOSED STRING FIELD-THEORY LOOPS WITH SYMMETRIC FACTORIZABLE QUADRATIC-DIFFERENTIALS

It is shown that symmetric modular invariant quadratic differentials with factorization properties allow the construction of covariant closed string field theory counterterms that restore BRST invariance to loop amplitudes. Off-shell scattering amplitudes are constructed in terms of hermitian vertices and propagators; they are manifestly factorizable in all channels, and unitary to all orders in perturbation theory. We discuss the modular invariance of Strebel quadratic differentials on any punctured surface. © 1990.
