Carbon-13 NMR and aqueous gel permeation chromatography studies were carried out on 10 intermediate samples obtained during the synthesis of a typical phenol-formaldehyde resol wood adhesive resin. Apparent kinetic parameters and an improved description of chemical structures in terms of the degree of polymerization and the degree of branching were obtained. The phenol-formaldehyde resol resin of this study was relatively low in molecular weight and high in branches with terminal o,o-bis(hydroxymethyl)phenol groups. © 1990, American Chemical Society.
