TRANSALKYLATION APPLIED TO THE STRUCTURAL CHARACTERIZATION OF KEROGENS

Spectroscopic measurements give only general information about the presence of aromatics and alkyl groups in kerogens. To obtain more specific details about the substitution of the aromatics by alkyl chains, transalkylation was applied to type II kerogens (Timahdit-Y and Tarfaya from Morocco, and Donnemarie from the Paris Basin) using CF3SO3H and benzene. Many products were obtained, including homologous series of phenylalkanes, 1,1-diphenylalkanes, alkylteteralins and alkylnaphthalenes. As the latter are secondary products from alkylbenzenes, the distribution of alkyl substituents of the aromatics in kerogen was determined. The transfer was evaluated by a study of the pyrolysis of the initial and transalkylated kerogens.
