MINERAL PARTICLES FROM ASIA FOUND IN VOLCANIC LOESS ON THE ISLAND OF HAWAII

X-ray diffraction studies of bulk samples, energy-dispersive analyses of single mineral grains, and X-ray mapping of particles in grain mounts show that quartz grains are present in late Quaternary tephric loess deposits of the Pahala Formation found at Pu'u o Mahana near Ka Lae (South Point) on the island of Hawaii. These particles are as large as 40-60 mum, and make up as much as 1-3% of the deposit. Quartz is virtually unknown in the basalts of the Hawaiian Islands, so these particles were evidently transported more than 10,000 km from Asia by late Quaternary wind storms.
