A conducting polymer, poly(3,4-dialkyl-1,6-phenyleneethynylene) (PDAPE) has been prepared for the first time and found to be highly soluble in many common solvents such as chloroform and toluene. Band-gap energy as large as 3.1 eV is evaluated in PDAPE films. Corresponding to large band-gap energy, blue light emission has been observed in a light-emitting diode Al/PDAPE/indium-tin-oxide (ITO) fabricated with PDAPE as the light-emitting layer. Unique temperature dependence of optical properties as well as electrochemical characteristics have also been found in PDAPE.
