摘要
The development of performance indicators (PIs) in higher her education in the UK since 1990 is reviewed. The period has witnessed a huge expansion it student numbers, brought to a halt in 1994. The expected development of quantitative indicators has not fully materialized. Instead the focus has shifted to qualitative assessments of teaching and research, which draw in varying degrees upon quantitative data. PIs are likely, however, to continue to play a variety of roles. Their usefulness will also be affected if evolving funding mechanisms give an increasing role to market forces.
