摘要
The incorporation of hydroxyapatite coatings on load-bearing implants may promote bone favourable remodelling in the vicinity of the prosthesis, thereby improving its long-term stability. In the present research, such a coating has been successfully applied to Ti-6Al-4V alloy using adhesive bonding technology. The initial bond strength and the durability of the coating after prolonged immersion in Ringers solution was monitored and compared with a similar coating prepared via plasma spraying. The adhesively bonded coating exhibited an excellent adhesion to the substrate, and its durability was superior to that of the plasma sprayed coating. Additionally the strength of the bonded coating was less dependent upon surface pre-treatment of the substrate. This behaviour is discussed in terms of the variation in stress distribution within the adhesively bonded and plasma sprayed coatings.
