AN ELLIPSOMETRIC SPECTROSCOPIC STUDY OF THE PASSIVE FILM ON IRON-POTENTIAL AND CHLORIDE-ION DEPENDENCE

摘要
The optical properties of the passive film on iron have been studied using in situ ellipsometric spectroscopy. Differential measurements giving strong optical evidence for the previously postulated Fe4+ species at low concentrations in the passive film at higher anodic potentials (0.8-1.6 V) are presented. Repeated examinations of the low potential region (<0.43 V) show no fine structure in the optical spectrum. No optical changes were observed that could be attributed to chloride adsorption or incorporation on or in the film, up to the moment of passive film breakdown and/or pitting.
