A matrix-transfer method was applied, using realistic material parameters, to independently model and confirm the viability of constructing an actual micron-sized device that shows passive anisotropic transmittance. A structure comprised of an asymmetric distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) made with 12 periods of alternating layers of polydiacetylene and rutile (TiO2) was considered. The polydiacetylene 9-BCMU was selected for this design because it has a high nonlinear refractive index and fairly low nonlinear absorption near the tail of the linear absorption band. The diode response was quick, as the polymer 9-BCMU has a nonlinear response time of about 2 ps. Moreover, the structure was found to be polarization insensitive at normal incidence.
