A method for the quantitative analysis of individual hydrocarbons in the C1-C16 range emitted in engine exhaust gases is described. A dual-column capillary gas chromatograph is used, which provides analysis of C1-C9 species on a porous-layer open-tubular alumina column and analysis of C8-C16 species on a CP-SIL 8 column. Some typical results are presented from the analysis of gasoline, diesel, and 2-stroke motorcycle exhaust. However, the main purpose of the paper is to discuss practical issues related to the analysis of exhaust gases by capillary gas chromatography, including methods of calibration, coelutions, sensitivity, long-term repeatability, and range of applicability. © 1995, Oxford University Press.
