The quadratic hyperpolarizabilities of a series of diaryls and related systems are studied. Comparison between experimental and calculated data provides a better understanding in the molecular structure-quadratic hyperpolarizability relationship. The effect on the hyperpolarizability of different acceptor substituents, multiple substitution and heteroaromatics is discussed. Finally, extension of the polyaryl conjugation path, up to four aryl units, is examined.
