INFLUENCE OF ORIENTATION ON THE PHOTOOXIDATION OF POLY(VINYL CHLORIDE)

PVC films were oriented by stretching above Tg at elongation ratios ranging from 1 to 8, and quenched under tension. Their photo-oxidation rates in the solar UV range (γ≥300 nm), were then compared with those of control samples of the same thickness. It appeared clearly that the photo-sensitivity increases with the degree of orientation characterized by infrared dichroism. This result was explained in terms of build-up, during stretching, of conformations which are especially reactive towards hydrogen abstraction by radicals. © 1990.
