Bi2WO6 was prepared by solid-state reaction between WO3 and Bi2O3. The optical properties were investigated and a Kramers-Kronig analysis made of reflectance data in the UV/VIS region and the optical constants n and k (refractive index and extinction coefficient respectively), and the absorption coefficient (alpha), determined. WO3 was shown to have an indirect band gap of 2.91 eV and Bi2O3 a direct gap of 2.77 eV. Bi2WO6 exhibits a direct band gap of 3.13 eV. This high value of the gap restricts its use as a photoanode for photoelectrochemical decomposition of water using solar radiation in the visible.
