A simple, two-dimensional fracture mechanics analysis was used to determine the influence of nonuniform residual surface stresses on the formation of radial indentation cracks. The indentation behavior depends on the depth of the compressive stresses, such that the apparent fracture toughness passes through a maximum with increasing indentation load. The analysis was used to estimate the surface stress from indentation data for a zirconia-toughened ceramic.
