In the present grain growth study, multi- and double-anneals are performed with zone-refined lead. The results show that two steady-state grain growth kinetics are possible when the driving force decreases below a critical value. Similar phenomena are observed with zone-refined tin. Two activation energies, one for each kinetic rate, are calculated for the same impurity level. By applying Cahn's impurity-drag theory to grain growth, all the results are well interpreted physically in terms of an impurity-grain boundary interaction even if the concentration is as low as 1 ppm. It follows also from our experiments that a given driving force can be regarded as a high, intermediate or low driving force depending upon the bulk impurity concentration. © 1968.
