Morphometry, microfluorimetry and electron microscopy were used to investigate the size, ploidy level, and morphology of host nuclei in the ericoid mycorrhizal systems Calluna vulgaris + Hymenoscyphus ericae and Vaccinium myrtillus + H. ericae. Hypertrophy was observed in nuclei of mycorrhizal hair roots of both plants. This could not be explained by polyploidization but rather by a lower degree of chromatin condensation.
