Infrared spectra of ethylene adsorbed on Al2O3-supported Pt, Pd, and Rh were measured at -78°C. π-Adsorbed ethylene was the main adsorbed species on these metals and a significant difference in the C=C stretching frequencies of π-adsorbed ethylene with metals was found. The dehydrogenated species of ethylene, MCHCHM, was also observed at -78°C. π-Adsorbed ethylene was rapidly hydrogenated by hydrogen at -78°C to form ethane. It was concluded that the stable σ-adsorbed ethylene was not formed in the course of hydrogenation of π-adsorbed ethylene. © 1979 Academic Press, Inc. All rights reserved.
