The spin‐wave instability theory for magnetic insulators is extended to include the effect of magnetocrystalline anisotropy for any arbitrary microwave pumping configuration. The results are used to analyze previously published data for parallel pumping and subsidiary absorption. Part I presents the general theory. It is shown that previous effective field anisotropy for mulations, which are valid for the analysis of ferromagnetic resonance, are not valid for spin‐wave instability calculations if the microwave field has components transverse to the magnetizing field direction. General expressions are obtained for first‐order process in cubic single crystals magnetized in an arbitrary direction in a (110) plane, with a general microwave pump polarization.
