A STUDY OF THE SPLIT TRANSITION IN YBA2CU3O7-DELTA BY SPECIFIC-HEAT AND RESISTIVITY MEASUREMENTS

Fully oxygenated ceramic YBa2Cu3O7-delta (delta approximately 0) exhibits a double transition with a sharp specific heat peak at 88K (T(c1)) and a mean field like step at 92.5K (T(c)) indicative of a multicomponent order parameter. With small increase in delta, T(c) - T(c1) decreases systematically (and reversibly) and is zero at delta = 0.05. Several interpretations are considered and we conclude that the evidence favours an unconventional pair interaction. From a preliminary analysis of the fluctuation component of the specific heat and resistivity we find a fourfold decrease in coherence volume as delta increases from 0 to 0.1.
