BARIUM FERRITE PARTICLES FOR HIGH-DENSITY MAGNETIC RECORDING

摘要
Zn substitution has been studied for Ba ferrite particles in order to improve their saturation magnetization for use in high density magnetic recording. A considerable increase in saturation magnetization has been achieved for Co-Zn-Nb substituted particles by substitution of an appropriate amount of Zn. The saturation magnetization for the optimal substitution was about 10% larger than that of the conventional Co-Ti substitution. It has also been found that Zn substitution reduces the switching field distribution (SFD) for the particles, which is an important parameter for high-density magnetic recording. In addition, a relatively large amount of Zn substitution exhibited a small temperature coefficient of coercivity at around room temperature. The mechanisms for the increase in saturation magnetization and the small SFD value of the Co-Zn-Nb substituted particles are also discussed.
