Treatment of 3,6-dibenzoyl-1,8-diphenyl-4,5-dithia-1,8-octanedione (II) with potassium ethoxide in ethanol provides 3,5-dibenzoyl-1,7-diphenyl-4-thia-1,7-heptanedione (IV) and potassium 1,4-diphenyl-2-butene-1,4-dione-2-mercaptide (VII) as the major products. A mechanism for cleavage of II involving a elimination of a mercaptide is proposed. Compound II is shown to be formed by disulfide interchange during the alkoxide cleavage of 6,7-dibenzoyl-3-carboxyl-4,5-dithiaheptanoic acid (I). © 1968, American Chemical Society.
