The third-order optical susceptibilities chi-1111(3)(-3-omega; omega, omega, omega)s for two different phases in vanadyl and titanyl phthalocyanine (VOPc and TiOPc) vacuum-deposited thin films are determined by optical third-harmonic generation (THG) measurements at wavelengths 1543 nm and 1907 nm. Thermal annealing causes a phase transition which accompanies a red shift in their absorption spectra and an increase in the chi-(3) value of 2-5 times in VOPc and TiOPc films. The enhancement of the third-order optical nonlinearities in tetravalent phthalocyanine films is discussed in terms of molecular packing.
