INVESTIGATIONS INTO THE SUITABILITY OF USING A SECONDARY CATHODE TO ANALYZE GLASS USING GLOW-DISCHARGE MASS-SPECTROMETRY

摘要
The use of a secondary cathode to promote sputtering of glass samples in a d.c. glow discharge cell is investigated. The discharge pressure is observed to have a profound effect on the sputtering yield of glass atoms. This is described in terms of redeposition of cathode atoms. Optimization of experimental parameters leads to the formation of a stable discharge, exhibiting an analytical precision of typically 6% RSD at ppm (mug g-1) levels and detection limits in the sub-ppb to ppb (ng g-1) range.
